Weaving.

Learning together.

Growing up as a berber in Northern Africa as a part of the Idaounidifi Tribe in Morocco, I sat by as a child and played with fistfuls of textiles as we watched the women from our village weave. I remember that I enjoyed being around them and I remember they would ask us to sit with the yarn as they worked. As a male was not allowed to learn, for the fact that weaving is only a feminine practice.

After 16 years in Marrakesh building my experience in hospitality and design I began to sell rugs. When I moved to California to open Soukie Modern with my Co-Founder I was finally able to see my obsession with rugs realized. Helping people to source and style traditional and vintage Moroccan Rugs eventually led to the next step, me becoming a weaver.

In 2019, I imported my family loom that my father made in the 1970’s for my mother. I started to weave, mixing traditional techniques and knots with more modern methods I was learning and that’s when the Berber Weaver collection began.

As clients came through the store and saw weaving in person, requests came in to learn. Eager to share, I worked to set up my first one-on-one lessons and eventual workshops and am now happy to offer them.

One-on-one Sessions

Lessons are available here in store, or for those looking to dive in a bit deeper, Taib can be hired to build a loom for your home and you can learn to build your own warps and weave from scratch. Contact Taib to set up an inquiry call and see what would be the best fit for you.

Group Sessions

Looking to host a corporate team building day, bachelor/bachelorette or birthday party? Group Weaving parties are a fun way for groups of 4-15 to bond over a new creative project. These can be hosted here at Soukie Modern on Tuesdays/Wednesdays or off-site any other day of the week. Contact Taib to set up an inquiry call and see what would be the best fit for you.
